Editorial Policy
How we select, rank, and review Antarctica expedition cruise operators.
Operator Inclusion Criteria
To be considered for inclusion in our rankings, an operator must meet all of the following baseline requirements:
- Active membership in IAATO (International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators)
- At least one verified Antarctic Peninsula, subantarctic, or deep Antarctic itinerary operating in the current or upcoming season
- Vessels with verified ice-strengthened or polar-class hulls appropriate for Antarctic waters
- An identifiable expedition team structure (naturalists, guides, or subject-matter specialists)
Operators that do not meet these criteria are excluded from consideration regardless of brand size or marketing prominence.
Ranking Methodology
Operators that pass the inclusion criteria are scored across six weighted dimensions:
- Ship capacity — smaller vessels score higher, as IAATO regulations directly reward small-ship operations with better shore access
- Average time ashore per day — where declared or verifiable through traveler accounts
- Expedition team credentials — academic backgrounds, number of polar seasons, naturalist-to-passenger ratio
- Activity breadth — range of optional and included activities beyond standard Zodiac landings
- Guest-to-guide ratio — smaller ratios indicate more individualized expedition experience
- Verified traveler feedback — aggregated from independent review sources across multiple seasons
Price tier is noted for reader reference but is not a ranking factor — we rank on experience quality, not cost.
Review Frequency
The full rankings are reviewed and updated annually, timed to the announcement of each new Antarctic season (typically April–June). Interim updates are published when operators make significant changes: new vessel additions, fleet retirements, partnership changes, or material operational modifications.
Commercial Relationships & Disclosures
This site has no commercial relationships with any of the operators listed. We do not accept sponsored content, paid placements, press trips offered in exchange for favorable coverage, or affiliate commission arrangements. All links to operator websites are direct editorial links. We do not earn any commission if a reader contacts or books with an operator.
If an operator contacts us to correct factual inaccuracies, we will review and address the information on its merits. Requests to change rankings or editorial assessments in exchange for commercial consideration are declined without exception.
Corrections Policy
We are committed to factual accuracy. If you identify an error — incorrect ship capacity, wrong URL, outdated information — please contact us with the details. Verified corrections are published promptly, with a note where appropriate.
